The El Paso gunslinger and Texas dime

I recently noted that I expected Matt Rhule would probably employ a 3-2-6 dime package pretty extensively at Baylor next season. Then I noted on Inside Texas that Todd Orlando would likely do the same with the Texas Longhorns’ roster.

The dime package is the new nickel.

I’ve also got a piece up on the insanely talented Colorado Buffalo signal-caller Steven Montez, who was largely ignored by the entire Big 12 because no one does much scouting in El Paso. Check that out over at Football Study Hall.

Coach used to go head to head with Chad Morris at Lake Travis (which he shares about) and that experience helped him fashion Cedar Park high school into a state power that appeared in the state title game twice over three years with a ring to show for it. Now he’s coaching in the Metroplex at Colleyville Heritage, which was the home to San Diego St QB Cam Roane last year and current UCLA commit, WR Kam Brown currently.

Willis and I talked about the current issues facing Texas high school recruiting, the misleading and unhelpful nature of 7 on 7 competitions, IMG academy, and the upcoming Big 12 season.

    It seems like Caden Sterns and DeMarvion Overshown might fit nicely in those nickel and dime spots, no?

      Overshown might grow into a freak LB that negates the need for an extensive dime package. Like when the Cavs would “play small” by putting LeBron at power forward. Is it really playing small when your PF is still 6-8, 260 just because he’s dominant on the perimeter?

        Great point. One reason I’m excited to see him in Burnt Orange. Also, based on your thinking, it seems like football (especially defense) might be headed toward a more “position-less” approach much like basketball.

        On another note, I love your work. I’ve learned more about football from reading your posts and articles than anything else. Well done.
