LSU shut the freaking door on BYU’s defense this last weekend while fielding a defense of Houston kids. I broke down how they mixed an old school 4-3 Under defense with a 2-4-5 nickel sub-package to wreak havoc on BYU’s pro-stylings on offense over at Saturday Down South.
I think their “confuse and clobber” offense paired with this Aranda defense is going to work very well this coming season. It’s really hard to get that offense behind the chains and while they are running clock, that defense is staying rested on the bench and keeping blitzes in their back pocket for key moments.
Meanwhile, you can’t help but notice all the Houston kids they had playing defense for them while Texas, Baylor, and Texas A&M’s defenses were all getting shredded this last weekend. So far it looks like Herman is going to shut the door on LSU continuing to eat so well in the Houston Metro, though we’ll see. I also think that it’s been more of a culture thing, with LSU doing a better job of fostering an environment that fashions athletes into premier defenders, then it has that LSU is grabbing the only kids in Houston that know how to play defense.
Nonetheless, it’s striking.
So weird to keep watching BYU stubbornly refuse to keep playing two high safeties while LSU methodically drove down the field, time after time.
Bama is the only team I’m used to seeing have success with that approach.

Not used to watching LSU get 6 or 7 man boxes on standard downs.
