I think it’s possible that Tennessee moving on from Joshua Dobbs could actually boost their offense if Quinten Dormady makes good on some of the potential I’ve seen in him.
Dormady was a 4-star “pro-style” recruit from a San Antonio suburb (Boerne) that missed his junior year with an injury from baseball and managed to collect some impressive SEC offers based off sophomore film and camp work. Much of the Big 12 offered him but not OU or Texas and now he’s taking over the Volunteers at a make or break moment for head coach Butch Jones.
Working in his favor is a talented supporting cast and the fact that Butch finally hired a QB coach to work the position (yes…Tenn was opting for a grad assistant to handle that role…). Their first test of the season will come against Paul Johnson’s flexbone Georgia Tech squad, I broke down Dormady’s prospects and this matchup over at SB Nation.
One of my favorite notes from this column is the observation that the years in which Georgia Tech has been good under Paul Johnson were the years when their QB was running wild and getting near or over 1k rushing yards. Their new QB doesn’t look the type to pull that off so I doubt they make much noise this season.

Awesome post on my beloved Vols. I too believe Dormady will surprise some people. He can supposedly run the ball some, but I doubt we’ll see him run much this year as he is meant to toss the ball around.
Even though our offense is your basic zone read spread, I think our RPO playvalling will increase due to Dormady being our QB. Should be interesting to see how our new OC handles the playcalling at this is his first time doing so.

As a Texas fan, Dormaday would be a nice option to have on the roster this year. [Insert comment about quarterback mismanagement here].
