What kind of spread offense to run?

June 29, 2017 by ianaboyd

Everyone runs the spread now. Well, almost everyone, it’s totally ubiquitous across the game of football, including at the higher levels. The question for major programs is now whether to run a pro-style spread or a college-style spread. I explain over at Football Study Hall.

My magnum opus on where blue blood advantage exists for Texas

June 28, 2017 by ianaboyd

Is up at Inside Texas, if you follow this link. Interestingly, Texas and Baylor are both pursuing similar paths to dominance in the Big 12. The Bears are mixing modern pro-style offense (drop back passing with 11 personnel) with a 22 personnel jumbo set for when they need to run the ball. That might work…I … [Read more…]

I like the Chris Paul trade for both teams, if…

June 28, 2017 by ianaboyd

Gonna take a brief pause here to talk a little basketball. The Houston Rockets just had a brilliant 2016 season that I found rather comparable to the Art Briles, Baylor offense. They embraced the extremes of spacing and spread concepts with a pick’n’roll offense geared around James Harden surrounded by shooters and typically either a … [Read more…]

The ultimate resource on modern quarters defense

June 28, 2017 by ianaboyd

My man @The_Coach_A from matchquarters.com did the coaching world a service and summarized a modern, anti-spread defensive philosophy in his new book: I’ll confess, I opted for the Kindle version, which still reads really easily but is perhaps a tad less useful for sharing for coaches that would want their staff to read this book. … [Read more…]

Breaking down the football in “Remember the Titans”

June 26, 2017 by ianaboyd

I was watching “Remember the Titans” recently on cable, as one is prone to do during summer evenings in the offseason when the only other alternative is baseball and you need to find something the whole family will agree on. During the Titan’s championship game I observed a minor flaw in the attempted overlap between … [Read more…]

Utah goes Air Raid

June 26, 2017 by ianaboyd

Kyle Whittingham has always coached great defenses and his coaching tree extends to multiple programs across the country now. The offense has been slower to come along, but now they’ve hired an up and coming guy who made his name coaching high schoolers like Jake Browning and then leading Eastern Washington to a ridiculous season … [Read more…]

Phil Montgomery is back for another season of “junkyard wars”

June 23, 2017 by ianaboyd

At football study hall I explained some of Montgomery’s fun run game tactics at Tulsa and how they’ve been using the veer and shoot offense to torch opponents in the AAC. There’s a pretty good chance he’s the head coach at Texas Tech in 2018 so Big 12 fans may want to read up on … [Read more…]

OU and Texas, 3-4 defense, and the 4i-technique

June 21, 2017 by ianaboyd

Over at Inside Texas I broke down Texas’ new challenge in finding 4i-technique defensive ends that can anchor their new 3-4 defense under Todd Orlando. The 4i is a developmental position, you want guys with length and size to play the position since they have to grapple with offensive tackles but that style also requires … [Read more…]

Is Wyoming going to push Boise off the top of the mountain?

June 19, 2017 by ianaboyd

I’ve been working on this post for a while, after breaking down the full 2016 Boise State vs Wyoming football game and then researching their respective depth charts. Boise State has a clever and physical approach to football, taking the classic underdog route of using speed and game planning to best their opponents. But in … [Read more…]

A Big 12 season opener you don’t wanna miss

June 19, 2017 by ianaboyd

The West Virginia vs Virginia Tech showdown in Landover, Maryland, which I’ve previewed over at SB Nation. I had to look up where that town was using Google Maps, which revealed to me that it’s in between Washington D.C. and Baltimore but really within the D.C. metroplex. This is a sneakily important area in recruiting … [Read more…]
