Big 12 Twitter-bag, Vol. V

March 22, 2017 by ianaboyd

It’s time for the new home of Sports Treatise to host it’s first Big 12-focused Twitter-bag. If it wasn’t obvious, that’d be where I take questions from all my fellow Twitter-bags and try to answer them in this space. Let’s begin… @Ian_A_Boyd do you think a 34 can work in the big 12? — Matt … [Read more…]

How the smashmouth spread stopped the Bison dynasty

March 20, 2017 by ianaboyd

North Dakota State favors complexity and development in their program on both sides of the ball. Against a good smashmouth spread team in James Madison that served them well on defense but poorly on offense. Read about it at Football Study Hall. The dilemma of matching explosive, spread offense with a disciplined D is one … [Read more…]

Jim Leavitt to Oregon…eventually K-State?

March 15, 2017 by ianaboyd

Over at SB Nation I broke down Oregon’s horrible defense Under Brady Hoke and how Jim Leavitt will look to correct issues fresh off his triumph at Colorado. What really stands out from watching Colorado is just how well coached their players were on the art of football itself moreso than their specific roles or … [Read more…]

The Big 12 at the combine

March 6, 2017 by ianaboyd

My favorite thing about the combine is getting concrete, carefully measured numbers for players that we’ve watched for years but only had BS numbers on from what their colleges measured and reported or numbers from SPARQ tests when they were juniors in high school. I wish we could get numbers on more players, but the … [Read more…]

Iowa State is looking for a defensive QB

February 28, 2017 by ianaboyd

One of the big early stories of Big 12 spring practice is that Iowa State’s Joel Lanning is going to get some work in at linebacker this spring. You can check out the story with quotes from Matt Campbell here and tucked away at the end of the article is this additional note: Redshirt freshman defensive … [Read more…]

Ranking the Big 12’s 2017 recruiting classes

February 24, 2017 by ianaboyd

Now that we’ve gone through every Big 12 recruiting class, I guess it makes sense to grade them all in comparison. This is a little tricky since each team has different goals for their program and different approaches to getting it done, but I’m basically going to rank each class on how likely it is … [Read more…]

Breaking down Baylor’s 2017 recruiting class

February 23, 2017 by ianaboyd

Matt Rhule walked into a tough situation, a true fixer-upper if you’ll forgive me, in taking over Briles’ Baylor program. Beyond the acrimony over the scandal that took down Briles and much of the leadership at Baylor, Rhule also came to find a gutted roster and a recruiting class with only a single committed player. … [Read more…]

Breaking down Texas Tech’s 2017 recruiting class

February 20, 2017 by ianaboyd

It’s a make or break year for Kliff Kingsbury at Texas Tech and that’s evident in this recruiting class, which features 11 early enrollees and nine total JUCO transfers in a group of 19 total players. I wondered if Kingsbury’s recruiting would fall off a bit here given the hot waters he’s treading in Lubbock … [Read more…]

(Some) of what I learned from watching the Texas 6A State title games

February 17, 2017 by ianaboyd

Those games featured future Big 12 QBs Shawn Robinson (TCU), Charlie Brewer (Baylor), and Xavier Martin (Texas Tech). It also provided a nice contrast between two diverging paths I see for spread-option football. I’ll be posting more on these QBs as I wrap up my breakdowns of the Big 12 recruiting classes but read my … [Read more…]
